Insects as Motifs

Nature has many wonders, from flowers to the stars in the sky. One of its most diverse and beautiful creations lies in the insect world and there is a long history of using insects as symbols to reconnect with the spirit of nature and find beauty in the simplicity.

Insects can be seen as a jewelry symbol as far back as the Victorian Period, from 1837 to 1901. This was when the rise of the Industrial Revolution changed almost every aspect of life with the introduction of steam power, chemical manufacturing, mechanized factory production, and heavy machinery over manual labor to name a few. These rapid changes inspired the trend in the appreciation of nature and our environment that still exists today. Insects became symbols of this change in many art forms, including jewelry. Examples from this period are……

In traditional Victorian times, insects were given different meanings. Butterflies symbolize the soul, Ladybugs for hope and protection, bees for industry, and spiders symbolize perseverance and skill. As time has passed, we have adapted and changed the meanings that are more fitting for this day and age. I am inspired by the natural world and its talismanic symbols, so naturally, insect imagery would be part of my designs. And... insects are adorable!

 Ladybug Totem

The Ladybug totem symbolizes protection, healing, good fortune, and grace. Ladybugs are considered joyful creatures, and encountering one is believed to bring good luck, instilling a sense of positivity and hope. I have always believed that making a wish upon a ladybug and letting it go will bring good fortune. Our designs are inspired by their natural beauty, which is enhanced by the mother-of-pearl background of the pendant. Our Ladybugs have sparkly diamond wings and a black and red enamel body.

 The 4 Element Bee

The 4 Element Bee is crafted in 18k yellow gold with a black enamel set with rubies and diamonds. Bees are the most essential insects, and their totem is the interconnectedness of life, industry, and hard work. As a gardener, I deeply love them as they pollinate our crops, flowers, and other flora. Their final gift is their delicious healing honey, which can be used as medicine against many different health conditions.

 Spider Motif

Our Spider motif,  from the Impeccable Words collection,  is represented by the Spider and its Web, shown in 18k yellow gold and diamonds. The Spider totem is pure feminine energy and creativity as nature's first artist, architect, and engineer. Its patience in weaving elaborate webs is akin to an artist's tenacity to create art and life. The Web catches our  Creative ideas, which float in the either. Much like a spider, a person's mind is a web, with creativity and inspiration entangled within, waiting to be expressed through forms of art or invention.

 And of course, The Butterfly…

The Butterfly, from the Impeccable Words collection, is crafted in 18k Yellow gold, blue sapphires, and diamonds. I believe in the power of evolution as we move through different emotional, spiritual, and life stages. Each is an opportunity to realign with our true north and go through this process with a lighter, more joyful heart. All transformation needs rest, which is why the Chrysalis and Butterfly are in the Impeccable Words 'Evolution' butterfly pieces.

As you can see, the natural world and its symbolism inspire me and my work. Today, with technology overtaking our world, I have found peace and balance in quiet time spent connecting to nature. Like the Victorians, connecting to the natural world through jewelry allows us to connect to something much more powerful and more significant than us.
