Danish ceramicist, silversmith and painter Nils Thorsson began his apprenticeship at Aluminia at just 13 years old. He went on to lead the company’s earthenware division from 1933 to 1969, while also directing the stoneware department at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory between 1949 and 1969.

In 1925, Thorsson was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair for his richly variegated Autumn series. His pioneering approach later led him to modernize glazing and spraying techniques, producing distinctive, textile-like surfaces through an endless exploration of color, texture and form.

Delicate silhouettes, sculptural reliefs and a distinctly Nordic sensibility define his work. His expansive visual language moves effortlessly between naturalistic motifs, abstraction and geometric pattern, expressed through glazed, raised and intricately incised decoration.

Today, Thorsson’s work is held in prestigious international collections, including Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, the Royal Copenhagen Museum, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza.
